Privacy Policy
The Bureau of Justice Statistics sponsors the survey under the authority of Title 42, United States Code, Section 3732. The U.S. Census Bureau conducts the surveys under the authority of Title 15, United States Code, Section 1525.Title 15 is the Department of Commerce's legislative authority. It permits the Secretary of Commerce to conduct special studies for other organizations. The Census Bureau uses this authority to conduct non-Title 13 reimbursable surveys and acts as a contractor for sponsoring agencies.
Section 1525: Authorizes the Census Bureau to provide services and receive payment for services rendered to other agencies; however, any data acquired under Title 15 must be used solely for a Title 15 purpose. Data acquired under Title 15 is subject to the provisions of the Privacy Act.
The Privacy Act of 1974, 5 U.S.C & 552a is a federal law that balances the Government's need to maintain information about individuals with the right of the individuals to be protected against unwarranted invasions of their privacy. Information privacy is the right to control the conditions under which information pertaining to you is collected, used and disseminated.
